The Orlando Sentinel will hold its annual Central Floridian of the Year awards ceremony on Thursday evening, Jan. 26, 2017, at the University of Central Florida.

Gunster attorney Tico PerezGunster attorney Hector “Tico” Perez was selected as one of five finalists for the honor. The 2017 honoree will be revealed at the ceremony, and runners-up may be singled out as well.

Every year, the Orlando Sentinel editorial board recognizes an individual or group for making a significant, positive difference in the region or state.

The annual ceremony celebrates current and past honorees in return for their contributions to the community. There is a cost to attend, and sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information, visit the Orlando Sentinel’s event page online.

According to the Sentinel’s Dec. 10 reveal of the 2017 finalists, Perez was selected for his role as commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America, where he helped navigate the path toward accepting gay Scouts and regaining the support of sponsors.

Perez ended his tenure as national commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America in May of 2016 – after eight years of volunteer service. He’ll continue his work on behalf of scouting, by taking on the newly created role of vice president of diversity for the organization.

At Gunster, Perez focuses his law practice on government relations and transactional corporate law matters.
