(June 15, 2009) – Jay Carmichael, a member of the Miami office of Gunster, Attorneys at Law, provided training, along with representatives from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Chief of Staff for Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart at a workshop for members of the Miami Chamber of Commerce titled, ” Maintaining a Legal Work Force: Immigration Compliance and Enforcement Issues.” The half-day event, designed for human resource managers and professionals, in-house counsel, attorneys and others working with hiring and retaining employees, featured a discussion of practical matters involved in preparing and processing work-related immigration documentation, a review of the revised I-9 form and employment verification list of acceptable documents, a special live/interactive presentation on E-Verify, the ICE Mutual Agreement Between Government and Employers and recommended employment eligibility verification best practices, and prospects for immigration reform under the Obama Administration. “Employers should no longer expect minor civil penalties for non-compliance. In this climate, it is essential that employers recognize this shift in enforcement focus and take steps to ensure compliance with employer eligibility verification requirements,” said Carmichael.
