WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (November 4, 2013) – Gunster, one of Florida’s oldest and largest full-service business law firms, is pleased to announce that the firm has been honored with four “healthiest employer” awards in 2013, recognizing Gunster’s innovation and leadership in the arena of corporate wellness.

Orlando:
1st place in its size category (10/25/13)
  South Florida:
1st place in its size category (6/7/13)
  Tampa:
1st place in its size category (9/13/13)
  Jacksonville:
Silver award for the 2nd year in a row (5/20/13)

Good health, especially maintaining it, is not a “one-and-done” solution. Thus, Gunster’s wellness committee, founded in 2007, is continually on the lookout for initiatives that will best motivate employees to get and stay healthy each year. In 2013, their efforts paid off with a set of popular, award-winning programs that include:

  • 12-month walking program utilizing an activity tracker (accelerometer) worn by each participant. These accelerometers are basically “smart” pedometers that can distinguish among walking, running, stair-climbing, etc., and provide participant’s accounts with appropriate activity credit. Information recorded by the accelerometers is downloaded automatically when participants walk past a reader in the office. Participants can monitor their activity online 24/7. Participants who register 1 million steps or more in the course of a year may choose either paid time off or discounts on their monthly health premiums for the following year. Approximately 50 percent of Gunster employees are participating in the program.
  • Annual health fairs, free of charge to employees, are another popular draw – with 75 percent of Gunster employees participating. Approximately 75 percent of Gunster employees attended our 2013 fairs (one is held at each of Gunster’s offices throughout the state, except for a couple of the smaller offices).
  • Funding of participation in various health activities. Gunster sponsors registration fees for many health-related activities through the year such as the Mercedes-Benz corporate run, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, American Heart Association, and Jacob’s Run, an event founded by Gunster attorney Adi Rappoport and his wife, Shaina, who lost a baby, Jacob, to Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) in 2002. The Jacob Isaac Rappoport Foundation has raised nearly $1 million toward finding a cure for SMA, a leading genetic killer of infants and toddlers.

Gunster has found that by motivating its employees to be healthy pays off in the form of a more productive and healthier workforce, lower insurance rates, and enhanced morale and communication.
