The name of the gala is inspired by an important part of sea turtle conservation efforts: keeping beaches dark during nesting season. When sea turtles hatch, they naturally move towards the ocean and swim out to sea. Artificial lights near the beach can confuse them in this process, leading them in other directions, towards predators and away from the safety of the water.

The event was hosted at the Marinelife Center itself, which was transformed into an under-sea experience. The evening featured a plated dinner, cinematography, dancing, and refreshments. Guests also had the opportunity to observe the many turtles which are being treated and rehabilitated at the center.

Visiting the Loggerhead Marinelife Center, which contains live turtles and a gift shop, is free and events like the Lights Out Gala play an important role in funding the nonprofits ongoing efforts.

Gunster was a proud sponsor of the event.
