Coeur du Feu / Fireheart, the new volume of short essays on legal practice by Michael Cavendish, is drawing comparisons to such laymen’s classics on virtues as Kempis’ Imitation of Christ and Kushner’s When Bad Things Happen to Good People.

Written for lawyers, judges, and law students, the books draws from the author’s most popular “virtue ethics” essays in legal journals—adding brand new material on civility, ethics, and legal professionalism. Lightly composed and compulsively readable, at times editorial, at times poetic, in Coeur du Feu / Fireheart Cavendish aims squarely for the heart of the practicing lawyer, while providing plenty of thoughtful content to engage the mind. Highly relevant to ongoing discussions on civility, professionalism, and ethics in virtually every U.S. state, the book provides timely queries and discussion on lawyer behavior.

The book’s foreword, written by General David Carey, the executive director of the American Inns of Court movement, adds essential context and provides a welcome table setting from which readers can sample the essays.

Michael Cavendish is the author of Orange Blossom Jurisprudence. He is a practicing lawyer in the fields of complex commercial litigation and human rights law. He has chaired committees on ethics for the American Bar Association and on privacy rights for the Florida Bar, has served on the Florida Bar’s Civil Procedure Rules Committee, and is a past winner of the Florida Bar Journal’s annual writing competition. He has also contributed as an essayist to The Bencher, the magazine of the American Inns of Court, the Federal Lawyer, and the National Law Journal.

Mr. Cavendish, 35, is a Florida native, and resides in Jacksonville with his wife and two young children. An honors graduate of the University of Florida College of Law, he was tapped by Florida Governor Charlie Crist to serve as a transition team member as the new Florida gubernatorial administration rose to office in December 2006.
