In a recent Part B News article, Gunster Shareholder Samantha Prokop is quoted extensively discussing factors retiring physicians should keep in mind when closing their practices, as well as the practical and legal steps they should consider before exiting.

Specifically, Prokop highlights the importance of making patient records available and notifying patients of the impending retirement. In addition, physicians should inform the state medical board, the DEA and the various payers with which they are enrolled. “You have to notify the Board when you are shutting down or retiring and let patients know who will be the records custodian so they can request records later. Most physicians are not aware of that requirement,” she explains.
