Kevin Dornan, deputy general counsel at Gunster and previously its ethics counsel, just published "Lessons Learned: Practical Ethics for Busy Lawyers."

Dornan's book focuses on practical ways to ethically deal with a variety of issues that inevitably seem to crop up in the daily practice of law.

According to the American Bar Association, the book presents a series of real-life situations that happened to real lawyers, and uses these studies to provide relatable advice on navigating the everyday pitfalls of the legal industry.

Topics include:

  • Avoiding unintended clients
  • Writing solid and ethical fee agreements
  • Ensuring referral fees comply with the rules of professional conduct
  • Maintaining confidentiality and communication
  • Being aware of and dealing with conflicts of interest
  • Senior lawyers pressuring subordinates for unethical behavior

In a foreward to the book, Peter Jarvis (himself co-author of a renowned ethics primer, "The Law of Lawyering"), says this collection of real-life legal blunders can help attorneys avoid making the same mistakes in these chaotic, complex and highly specialized 21st-century times.
