In a recent Bloomberg feature, Gunster attorney Bruce Lamb weighs in on the new developments and regulations that nursing homes must implement in wake of last year's hurricane season. In 2017, Hurricane Irma revealed the underlying problems nursing homes face when preparing for hurricanes and keeping their residents safe. As residents succumbed to the heat from lack of power, federal and state legislatures developed new protocols and measures to put in place before the next hurricane season.
Lamb comments on Florida's nursing homes and states that they are "generally much more prepared" after reviewing their evacuation plans and implementing emergency power. Although plans in place are one thing, taking action and holding the facilities accountable will be the challenge going forward. Lamb suggests that the next step for nursing homes, past emergency power, is creating more standardized emergency plan requirements.
