TAMPA, Fla. (March 15, 2018) – Gunster, one of Florida’s oldest and largest full-service business law firms, today announced that David Barnhill has joined the firm as a shareholder focusing on international tax planning and international tax controversy representation. He will be based in the firm’s Tampa office.

Barnhill’s practice is aimed at representing corporate clients in inbound and outbound restructuring and international tax planning as well as individuals in international tax matters, including pre-residency planning and expatriation. His counsel covers, but is not limited to, a variety of issues regarding U.S. international income tax and reporting compliance issues; representation of clients in international tax matters involving United States Tax Court proceedings; Internal Revenue Service appeals and examination cases and more.
Prior to joining Gunster, Barnhill worked with a boutique tax firm in Tampa. There he advised on international tax planning, and managed the firm’s Zurich, Switzerland office in 2015 which included advising Swiss Banks in connection with participation in the U.S. Department of Justice Program for Non-Prosecution Agreements or Non-Target letters. Earlier, he served the Internal Revenue Service Office of Chief Counsel regarding implementation of off-shore tax compliance legislation and more.
Barnhill is admitted to the Utah State Bar, the Florida State Bar, the United States Tax Court, and the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. He is also a member of The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). Barnhill has lived and worked in Zurich, Switzerland and St. Petersburg, Russia, and is proficient in the Russian language.
He earned his Master of Law (LL.M) in Taxation at New York University School of Law, a J.D. from Indiana University Maurer School of Law, and a Bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University.
