As of Dec. 1, 2016, the U.S. Copyright Office will no longer accept paper-filed agent designations in connection with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and parties that previously designated an agent with the office via a paper filing have until Dec. 31, 2017, to submit new registrations through the electronic system or lose their safe harbor protection under the DMCA.

Federal court blocks implementation of overtime rule changes
On Nov. 22, a federal district court issued a preliminary injunction blocking the U.S. Department of Labor from implementing the new overtime rules set to take effect on Dec. 1, 2016.
Workers’ comp rate hike of 14.5 percent goes into effect Dec. 1
The rate increase will go into effect Dec. 1, 2016, for all new and renewal policies. Companies would be wise to begin planning now for the increase, even if policies are not up for renewal until next year.

EPA revises rule on greenhouse gases

On October 3, EPA released a revised set of rules regarding the permitting of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in response to earlier court decisions invalidating portions of the rule, most notably in Utility Air Regulatory Group (UARG) v. EPA, decided in June 2014 by the U.S. Supreme Court.
