FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (July 9, 2009) – Luna E. Phillips, an environmental lawyer and LEED Accredited Professional with Gunster, Attorneys at Law, provided insight on Florida’s environmental programs and challenges to the Florida Power & Light (FP&L) legal team on Monday, June 29.  Her presentation, titled “Florida’s Environmental Challenges,” shed light on timely water resource issues including balancing water supply needs, Everglades restoration, climate change and renewable energy solutions. Phillips also outlined the ramifications of the pending federal climate change bill, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, recently passed by the House of Representatives.

“Groundbreaking legislation like the federal climate change bill, coupled with Florida’s progressive water resources laws, will certainly shape how we address our environmental challenges now and in the decades to come,” said Phillips. “FP&L is at the forefront of developing sustainable energy solutions, and we’re hopeful this presentation offered its team a comprehensive view of how these issues can collectively affect a company’s ability to plan for its future.”

Phillips, who is Board Certified by the Florida Bar in state and federal government and administrative law, concentrates her practice on water resources law, sustainable development and climate change matters.  Prior to joining Gunster, she was a senior attorney for the South Florida Water Management District and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, working on the development and implementation of significant environmental legislation and regulatory programs.  Today, Phillips represents her clients on complex environmental permitting matters before state, federal and local agencies.
