MIAMI, Fla. (June 30, 2009) – Clemente Vazquez-Bello, a shareholder and board member of Gunster, Attorneys at Law, was recently reelected General Counsel to the Florida International Bankers Association (FIBA) for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. This is his second consecutive term as General Counsel.
FIBA is a not-for-profit trade association founded in 1979, primarily to service the needs of banks and financial institutions engaged in international business in Latin America (including Central and South America and The Caribbean). FIBA’s current members include more than 70 foreign and domestic banks, from 18 countries and 4 continents that maintain a business presence in South Florida, primarily in Miami. U.S. banking regulators and law enforcement recognize FIBA for its knowledge and expertise in international banking and regulatory matters, particularly in BSA/AML compliance, as well as for its extensive educational training programs.
Vazquez-Bello is well-known for his career as counsel to many domestic and foreign banks, with a special emphasis on developing and implementing policies and procedures to prevent, detect and react to the movement of illicit capital. He is FIBA’s representative in the U.S. Treasury Department’s Bank Secrecy Act Advisory Group of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Due to his significant expertise, Vazquez-Bello lectures around the world on anti-money laundering and Bank Secrecy Act compliance issues.
