Martin Press, a Gunster shareholder and member of the firm’s tax practice, was asked to comment on the former UBS banker who exposed a $20 billion tax scheme and was rewarded with $104 million from the IRS.

The matter involves two different government agencies looking at the matter differently, Press told the Daily Business Review.

In 2009, the former banker, Bradley Birkenfeld, was sentenced to more than three years in prison after being charged with shielding billionaire Igor Olenicoff, according to the DBR article.

But, from the IRS’ financial perspective, Press said, the information received from Mr. Birkenfeld really paid off in that publicity of the matter aids compliance with the agency’s voluntary disclosure programs.
