Jacksonville, Fla. (April 23, 2008): The Jacksonville Bar Association’s Section of Environmental and Land Use Law (ELU) today announced the winner of the organization’s Inaugural Writing Competition sponsored by Gunster Yoakley, Attorneys at Law—Vanessa A. De Rosa.

Ms. De Rosa’s original essay, Coastal Construction Control Lines: Do They Protect Florida’s Sandy Beaches as they Should?, was announced as the winning entry, and she was presented with the Section’s trophy—a bronze statue depicting a perched Florida Red-Tailed Hawk.

The Inaugural Writing Competition was launched this year to highlight and encourage the development of scholarly writings on legal topics central to the quality of life in Northeast Florida. The Section plans to make the competition an annual event. The Inaugural Writing Competition was underwritten by Gunster Yoakley, Attorneys at Law. The emblem selected for the trophy, the Red-Tailed Hawk, buteo jamaicensis, is Florida’s largest hawk, and inhabits the uplands of Northeast Florida and other parts of the state.

The ELU Section comprises members of the Jacksonville Bar Association whose practices and professional interests include all aspects of environmental and land use law. The section holds regular meetings throughout the year and hosts a speaker series featuring notable government officials, regulators, and private practitioners. This year the section is chaired by Michael Cavendish.

Vanessa A. De Rosa is a graduate of the Stetson University College of Law and an honors graduate of the University of Central Florida. She is a member of the Jacksonville Bar Association, Jacksonville Hispanic Bar Association, and Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association. She practices in Jacksonville.
