MIAMI – October 9, 2007 — Gunster, Yoakley & Stewart recently held  the first  welcoming reception for Italian Ambassador Marco Rocca to South Florida as he prepares to begin his term as the new Counsel General of Italy in Miami.

“It is wonderful to have Ambassador Rocca back among us, a unique and wonderful team with his wife Haydee” said Gunster Yoakley shareholder and corporate attorney Arthur J. Furia, who serves on the National Italian American Foundation’s (NIAF) Board of Directors and as a Regional Vice President and member of its National Executive Committee. “Ambassador Rocca’s return to Miami after being here in the mid-90’s as our first Italian Consul General is a source of great joy among the Italian and American communities in Southeast USA”.

The reception took place at One Biscayne Tower at Gunster Yoakley’s Miami office. The attendees were among South Florida’s most prominent business, civic and government leaders involved in international trade including:  Consul Generals from twelve countries, including France, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Thailand and Iceland;  Hank Klein, Chairman of the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce; Monsignor Franklyn Casale, President St. Thomas University; Ray Ferrero, President Nova Southeastern University; U.S. Federal District Judge Ursula Ungaro; Miami-Dade County Judge Don Cohn; Broward County Court Judge Paul Luzzo; John Garofano, Director, US Department of Homeland Security; Harriet Carter with the office of Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen; and representatives from Enterprise Florida and the Beacon Council.

Rocca arrives in Miami after serving as the Italian ambassador to Panama. He has represented Italy for more than 30 years in various positions through out the world.

In 1974, Rocca began his career in Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the vice consul at the Consulate General in Melbourne, Australia. He also served as the first secretary at the Embassy in Madrid; counselor at the Embassy in Lima; consul general in Miami; and the first economic counselor at the Embassy in Madrid. Rocca has held include directorate general for Italians abroad, directorate general for economic affairs, directorate general for the Mediterranean and Middle East, and directorate general for the Americas.
