MIAMI – June 19, 2007 –Arthur J. Furia, a shareholder and corporate attorney with Gunster Yoakley’s Miami office, has been appointed to the National Italian American Foundation’s (NIAF) Executive Committee and co-chair of its Council 2000 Committee.

“These positions play a significant role in the oversight of our organization,” said Joe Salamone, NIAF’s National Executive Director.“ Over the years, Furia has shown his unyielding commitment in promoting and preserving the heritage, trade, and culture for those Italians who call the United States their home. We are very pleased with his most recent appointment to this nationally recognized board.”

Furia, who is of Italian-American descent, played a pivotal role in NIAF initiatives specific to Florida including a 2007 trade mission to Milan with then Florida Lt. Gov. Toni Jennings; the Italy-Americas Medical Congress with the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, hosting the ALS cooperative between medical researchers in Miami and Italy to share research and discover links to finding a cure for the disease; and the first-ever U.S. Human Trafficking Conference held at St. Thomas University with then U.S.A. Ambassador to the Vatican Jim Nicholson, leading a prominent group of delegates to bring attention to this global problem. In addition, NIAF has provided large annual grants in scholarship money to worthy Florida high school students to enable them to attend college.

NIAF, a non-profit, non-partisan organization based in Washington, D.C., has served the Italian-American community for the past 32 years and has played a pivotal role in preserving Italian culture in America.
