Fort Lauderdale, Fl – Orbis, a non-profit organization for young, South Florida business professionals, is teaming up with the Wilton Manors-based community outreach organization The Shepherd’s Way, in conjunction with Volunteer Broward, for a community service event to be held on Saturday, September 8, 2007.  The Shepherd’s Way provides emergency shelter, food, clothing, childcare, rent assistance and other services for homeless families.  Through program offerings, The Shepherd’s Way empowers homeless families to make the permanent lifestyle changes essential to breaking the cycle of homelessness.  During this Saturday morning community service event, members of Orbis will volunteer at The Shepherd’s Way to host a picnic lunch for the ‘residents’ of The Shepherd’s Way, and will also provide much needed support by planting a garden, repairing and painting the shelters and lending a hand wherever it’s needed.David C. Scileppi, an attorney with the Fort Lauderdale office of Gunster Yoakley and co-founding member of Orbis noted that this activity launches a new element to Orbis – its community service programs.  “We are pleased to be working with Volunteer Broward and The Shepherd’s Way to showcase how the strength of people working together toward a common goal can make a real difference in the lives of the most vulnerable in our community,” he said.  The Shepherd’s Way empowers individuals and families to make the changes necessary to break the cycle of homelessness and seek permanent solutions.

Orbis is dedicated to reaching out to the community in order to bring awareness and resources to local organizations.   Most recently, Orbis hosted “An Aviation Experience,” an evening reception co-sponsored by Riverwalk Trust and the BACH (Benefactors advancing Covenant House), and “An Evening at the Grape”, which included a presentation on business protocol and benefited Camp Good Grief, a camp for children who have lost a loved one.

“We believe in the community, and we know we can make a difference,” said Michael S. Schimmel, co-founder of Orbis, also with the Fort Lauderdale office of Gunster Yoakley.  “While our mission is to provide networking opportunities for young professionals, we know that networking with the combined purpose of helping the community offers the best results.”
